↟ Break Away Tale NR 161 // @the_restless_ocean

We are Samantha and Chris and we live on a widebeam canal boat along with Chris’s daughter Issy who stays with us for half the week. Almost one year ago to the day we moved aboard, before that we had both lived in various alternative dwellings including vans, boats and converted garages.⠀

Our boat needed quite a lot of work when we moved in. It was being used as a marina boat which was not at all self sufficient so we set up solar panels, a wood burner, a compost toilet and a roof herb and veg garden so that we could be more off grid. We really love nature and are trying to live in harmony with her as much as possible and do things in a responsible and sustainable way, it’s a work in progress but we are getting there.⠀

Chris is an artist and I was working as a professional photographer so luckily we were both able to work remotely, although I am changing paths and now have a job at a botanical garden studying botanics and horticulture so I can work more directly with nature.⠀

There are pros and cons to living this way, the first winter was very cold and difficult and it is a lot of hard work to continuously cruise without a home mooring, but we prefer to focus on the positive; the freedom, the ability to travel and explore new places, the closeness to nature, the days when it is warm enough to have barbecues on the roof, swimming in the river and foraging for wild foods along the tow path. It’s always an adventure and sometimes surprises us and pushes us out of our comfort zone but really we feel so lucky to call this our home.⠀
